Who We Are

The Ohio Alliance Against Wage Theft is a growing coalition of workers, researchers, community advocates, attorneys, clergy, and unions committed to ending wage theft in our state.

We believe:

Ohio Must Enforce Its Existing Wage Laws: Ohio’s Bureau of Labor & Worker Safety (LAWS), which enforces our wage laws, is under-funded. The budget for wage enforcement must be increased. LAWS should build relationships with local advocates to improve the effectiveness of its enforcement strategies.

Ohio Must Improve Its Wage Laws: In Ohio the penalties for stiffing workers don’t deter employers. Ohio must create stiffer penalties for employers who fail to pay agreed upon wages and improve collection to return money where it belongs. Ohio must take additional steps to crack down on employee misclassification, something employers do to avoid paying wages, workers compensation, and taxes. Companies that abuse employees in this way end up imposing unfair costs on other taxpayers, the public, and other employers, as well as on the workers who are victims.

Ohio’s Wage Theft Victims Must Not Stand Alone: Wage Theft victims are often low-income people of color without access to advocates or the resources to pay for an attorney. Workers must have better access to informed and capable advocates who are ready to assist them.

Ohio Wage Theft Should Be Exposed: Wage Theft is the crime wave no one talks about. Universities and state agencies must support research into wage theft and employee misclassification. All workers must be educated on their right to a legal wage and trained on the various ways to identify and prevent wage theft.

The Alliance emerged from a May 2010 meeting sponsored by the Cincinnati Interfaith Workers Center and Policy Matters Ohio.
